Enjoying an average of 2,700 hours of sunshine per year, Nelson is often referred to as the ‘Sunshine Capital of New Zealand’.Nelson's annual rainfall is generally concentrated in the winter months following a dry autumn, thus allowing the grapes optimal ripening conditions and low disease pressure. Our warm days and cool nights during the critical summer and autumn ripening period help produce wines with intense varietal characters and first class aromas. Winter ground frosts of down to -10°C are followed by sunny pleasant blue sky days while summer generally reaches 30°C on hot days.As the northern hemisphere winter subsides, we prepare for the grape harvest in Nelson, New Zealand. Vintage (harvest) extends from late March through until early May with the grapes being picked at the peak of their ripeness.Selection of premium new local vineyard sites continues to provide us with exciting opportunities and possibilities. From nursery through to vineyard, each site has been chosen and developed with varieties and clones most suited to the particular location. With the majority of fruit being Estate grown, we feel this ensures complete control over all areas of the grape production including clone selection, irrigation, disease management, yield and fruit quality. Today, we harvest from six Estate producing vineyards (identified by three main soil types) across the Nelson region.
